It’s a long (but colorful) story. . . .
Granny the Great’s apartment—25 December 2011
For the last three years (three visits), I’ve taken a notebook with me when I visit Granny the Great in Arizona. She breaks out into the best stories. This matchbook collection was started by my GG (GtheG’s mom) and my great aunt Jeanne (GtheG’s sister-in-law, after whom I’m named) after a trip to New York. Granny and Papa Jerry added to it, and friends joined in. The collection grew from being housed in a small bowl, to a large bowl, to a larger bowl. When they moved from a house to an apartment, they had to sell the bowl and table; but, Granny remembered a damaged screen in the storage room. My uncle Dan was drafted to assemble (after removing the staples and destroying the matches). The screen has made a bunch of moves since, and is occasionally repaired by Dan. It’s quite the history lesson—listening to Granny tell about special events and travels associated with each matchbook.
